How Dynamic Site Delivery Works
Delivery of site content via the Akamai EdgePlatform proceeds as follows: Each end user request is dynamically mapped to an Akamai edge server via Akamai’s intelligent DNS. Upon receiving a request for content, an edge server will retrieve the appropriate content (HTML page, image, document, etc.) from a local cache or from the origin if the content is uncacheable, apply features selected by the customer, perform any appropriate edge processing, and finally deliver the resulting content to the requesting user.

To ensure a high cache-to-hit rate for cacheable content, such as product images, support documentation or software downloads, requests are directed to Akamai servers most likely to contain the requested content. Cache coherence features help ensure that the content served to end-users is always fresh. Content that has been marked as uncacheable, such as personalized pages or transactions, is retrieved from the origin for each request, as appropriate.
Trips to the origin server to refresh and retrieve content are optimized via the use of persistent connections, thereby reducing connection setup and teardown latency through reuse of established connections. Additional connection optimization techniques tune the parameters that govern server-to-server connections, as well as reduce the number of long-haul round trips required to retrieve content embedded in the site.
Benefits to your business:
-
Increased Conversion Rates – For commerce-based Web sites, poor site performance can lead to users abandoning the site. Akamai’s Dynamic Site Delivery improves the reliability and the transaction performance of the Web site, decreasing abandonment and improving conversion rates.
-
Improved Customer Satisfaction – Customer satisfaction is directly related to Web site and application adoption. If pages load slowly, users will abandon the site, turning instead to higher-cost methods of interacting with the business, such as call centers. By leveraging Akamai’s EdgePlatform, the Dynamic Site Delivery service effectively places your content near requesting users, where better performance and reliability are realized.
-
Global Reach and Expansion - Business growth means more consumers will need access to your Web site. With the capacity on-demand provided by the Dynamic Site Delivery service, companies are able to reach global end users without the time, expense and risk of expanding their of infrastructure, because they can deliver dynamic Web sites using Akamai’s EdgePlatform.
-
Improved Performance and Reliability – The global deployment of Akamai’s EdgePlatform enables us to deliver content and applications from servers closer to end users, extending the existing centralized hosting architecture. Akamai’s proprietary technology and globally deployed network of servers allow us to identify and to avoid Internet problems, improving transaction reliability. Additionally, the reduction in long-haul round trips, provides improved performance.
- Simplified E-Business Infrastructure – Using Akamai’s EdgePlatform reduces requirements for hardware, software, and bandwidth infrastructure, as well as the complexity and cost of managing it. With the Dynamic Site Delivery service, enterprises can cost-effectively deploy sites without significant upfront capital expenditures required to provision for peak performance and without additional infrastructure build-out as their business grows.
